THE trial of a man who is accused of murdering two women and two young children in Newcastle West almost two years ago failed to get underway as scheduled this week.

John Geary, aged 32, who is originally from Milford, Co Cork but who has an address at Meadow Court, Newcastle West, is charged with murdering his former partner Sarah Hines, 25, her son Reece, 3, and baby daughter Amy, five months, at a house in the Hazelgrove estate in Gortboy “on or about” November 15, 2010.

Geary is also accused of murdering Ms Hines’ friend, Alicia Brough, 20, on the same date.

The trial, which is expected to last more than two weeks, had been scheduled to commence at Ennis Courthouse this Tuesday.

However, in advance of the trial getting underway, it was adjourned until November 22, next following an application from lawyers representing the defendant.

Members of the public who had been summonsed for jury service on Tuesday were advised in advance by the Courts Service not to attend Ennis Courthouse as the trial would not be proceeding.

A new trial date is expected to be fixed on the next date.
