THE Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission is investigating the circumstances of a road collision in County Limerick in which an on-duty garda was injured.

The officer, who is attached to Newcastle West Garda Station, was driving a marked patrol car which was in collision with another vehicle - believed to be an suv - at Lacy’s Cross, on the outskirts of the town at around 2pm.

The garda and two occupants of the other vehicle are being treated for their injuries at the Mid Western Regional Hospital. Although serious, their conditions are not believed to be life threatening.

A spokesperson for the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission confirmed the incident was referred to it by the Garda Commissioner under Section 102 of the Garda Siochana Act.

The scene has been sealed off to facilitate technical examinations and diversions are in place on the N21 between Newcastle West and Rathkeale.
