INVESTIGATIONS are underway after a County Limerick pensioner was confronted by masked thieves armed with a gun and a knife in her home over the weekend.

The woman, who is in her early seventies, was at home in Murroe Wood on her own at 9pm on Saturday. A garda spokesperson said two men, who were wearing balaclavas, forced a rear door and gained entry to the bungalow.

“They had a firearm and knife and demanded money from her. The ordeal lasted 20 minutes and they bound her hands. They left empty handed but before they left they locked her in to the bathroom,” said a garda spokesperson.

When the alarm was raised gardai rushed to the scene and the lady was attended to by her local GP. After the “horrific” crime the woman is said to be severely “shocked”.

An incident room has been set up in Bruff.

The garda spokesperson said: “We are appealing to anyone who was in the Murroe area between 8.30 and 10pm and saw anything suspicious to contact us in Bruff on 061-382940.

Any information from the public that can assist us with the investigation would be geatly appreciated,” said the garda spokesperson.
