Tributes are being paid to the 29th Knight of Glin who has died following after a long illness.
Desmond FitzGerald is being described as a man of great intellect who had a passion for architecture and conservation and an eminent scholar.
He died in the early hours of Thuesday morning at the age of 74. He is survived by his wife Olda and three daughters.
The Knight became President of the Irish Georgian Society in 1991 and spent many years promoting their work.
The Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Jimmy Deenihan, expressed his deepest sympathy to the family of Desmond Fitzgerald.
“I knew the Knight personally and I can remember so well having wonderful informed conversations with him in his home. He was always generous with his advice and kind in his remarks,” he said.
Minister Deenihan added: “With his passing, the Irish Georgian Society and Ireland has lost one it its titans and greatest champions of the arts and heritage.”
