DEPUTY Willie O’Dea has described as “false” internet reports that he was assaulted in the Hyde Road area of the city while canvassing this morning.

A spokesperson for Deputy O’Dea said the reports on Twitter, which claimed he was “boxed in the head” by an angry motorist, are a “false alarm.”

“He just roared at him; there was no confrontation. I’ve been with him all day, we took a break for lunch and we’re back canvassing in the Hyde Road area now,” said one of his campaign team.

Responding directly to the rumours Deputy O’Dea posted a message on Twitter saying he was amazed. “Amazed how fast made up stories get on web, guy from outside my constit gets out of car to harangue me & web fills with stories of mayhem,” read his Tweet.

A spokesperson for the Fianna Fail Press Office said there was no truth to the reports that Deputy O’Dea was assaulted

The reports on Twitter appear to have been initiated by a Limerick man at about 2pm this Thursday.
