The multi-vehicle collision happened shortly before 6.30pm at Ballingowan - around three miles outside Newcastle West.

A woman, aged in her early 70s, was fatally injured and pronounced dead at the scene. She was a passenger in one of the cars.

The drivers of three vehicles were taken to University Hospital Limerick with injuries which have been described as minor.

Emergency services including gardai, ambulance personnel and three units of the Limerick City and County Fire Service attended the scene and part of the road remains closed to facilitate a forensic examination.

It was the second fatal accident on the N21 this month.

Local diversions are in place with traffic coming from Kerry is being diverted via Lacey’s Cross while those travelling from Limerick are being diverted via Reen’s Pike.

Investigations are continuing and gardai at Newcastle West can be contacted at 069 20650.
