A suspect device was made safe in Newcastle West
GARDAI in Newcastle West are investigating the discovery of a suspected pipe-bomb in a housing estate in the town this evening.

GARDAI in Newcastle West are investigating the discovery of a suspected pipe-bomb in a housing estate in the town this evening.

A number of houses were evacuated after the device was found on a road in the Knights Court area at around 7pm.

Following the discovery, the area was sealed off pending the arrival of a Defence Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team.

“The team arrived on scene at 8.30pm. The device was confirmed as viable and was made safe at the scene without the need for a controlled explosion,” said a spokesperson for the Defence Forces, who confirmed the scene was declared safe at 10pm.

Items of an evidential nature were handed over to the gardaí to assist them with their investigation.
