GARDAI are reiterating their warning to parents of young children to be vigilant following reports that a schoolgirl was the subject of a “suspicious approach†on the outskirts of the city last week.
Gardai have confirmed they have received a report about the incident which is believed to have happened at around 5pm on November 13.
“We have received a report and we are investigating it and it would be premature to comment further until the investigation is completed,†said Insp Luke Conlon of Henry Street garda station.
It is understood gardai were contacted after a girl, believed to be aged 14, informed her parents that a man driving a white van attempted to begin a conversation with her as she was walking in the Annacotty area.
There have been no suggestion the man made any physical contact with the teenager or that he tried to get her into the vehicle.
Gardai at Castleconnell are investigating all of the circumstances of the incident, which caused some alarm in the locality after parents of children attending schools in the area were informed of the incident by text message.
While, urging people not to overreact, it is understood gardai have visited a number schools in an effort to remind parents and their children of the dangers of engaging in conversations with strangers.
“It is important that parents speak to their children about approaches from strangers and also that they give clear instructions to their children that approaches of this type are not appropriate and that it is important that they report these incidents immediately to their parents, teachers or to another responsible adult,†said crime prevention officer Sgt Brian Broderick.
Last week’s incident follows reports of a number of similar incidents earlier this year.
Those incidents happened in the Fedamore area and at Lord Edward Street in the city.
Again, a white van is said to have been involved and both incidents caused a frenzy on the internet and on on social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook
Gardai at Roxboro Road are investigating both incidents and there is no suggestion they were connected to what happened in Annacotty last week.
