Gardai are searching for two men who broke into the Tesco store in Newcastle West in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Gardai are searching for two men who broke into the Tesco store in Newcastle West in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The men, who were armed with a sledgehammer and a crowbar, entered the premises on the outskirts of the town at around 3am after they cut the phone lines and broke a glass panel on one of the emergency exits.

The culprits, who were dressed in dark clothing and wore green gloves, also disabled the CCTV system at the store before attempting to gain access an office inside.

According to Sgt Denis Woods, the men then used to the sledgehammer in an attempt to get into the office but failed. “They tried to take cash from the office and luckiliy they didn’t suceed in gaining admittance,” he said.
