GARDAI have requested the assistance of the Army bomb squad following the discovery of a suspicious device in the village of Croom.
The suspected-pipe bomb was discovered shortly after 4pm by a member of the public who was out walking in a laneway behind the Main Street, near the Spar Store.
After conducting an initial examination, gardai from Croom and Askeaton stations sealed off the scene and contacted the Army Explosive Ordinance Disposal team at Collins Barracks in Cork.
The main street was closed to traffic for a time but it has since re-opened altough some restrictions remain in place. A number of parked cars were also removed from the area as a precaution.
