INVESTIGATIONS are underway to establish the cause of a fire at a commerical premises on the northside of Limerick city.

The alarm was raised shortly after 8am, when flames were seen at the Woodworkers Store at Sexton Street North, Thomondgate.

Three units of the Limerick city fire service attended the scene of the fire along with a fire brigade from Shannon.

Eyewitnesses say the blaze started in an upstairs part of the building, which was extensively damaged.

Gardai have sealed off the building and forensic examinations will be conducted later today. It is believed the fire was started malicioulsy.

Nobody was injured in the blaze.
