Man recovering in hospital following vicious assault in city

GARDAI at Henry Street are investigating a vicious assault in which a young homeless man was stamped on the head in Limerick city centre on Friday night.

GARDAI at Henry Street are investigating a vicious assault in which a young homeless man was stamped on the head in Limerick city centre on Friday night.

The incident occurred at Church Street, just off John's Square, shortly before 9pm.

Gardai are asking for witnesses to come forward as they investigate a motive for the savage attack that left the injured man in a critical condition at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital.

It is understood he was found unconscious on the street and was bleeding from the mouth and nose after suffering severe blows and kicks to the head.

His condition had improved on Sunday with the outlook stable.

The injured man is aged in his early 20s and is originally from Cork. He has been living in Limerick for a number of years but has no fixed abode.
