Mike Russell died when the car he was driving hit a ditch at Curraghroche, Galbally in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The Ballylanders native, who was originally from Galbally, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A teenager, who was a passenger in the car, was treated for non life-threatening injuries at the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Dooradoyle.

The stretch of road where the single-vehicle crash happened was closed for several hours yesterday as gardai conducted technical examinations at the scene.

Mr Russell was the 11th person to die on Limerick roads this year.
