The woman, who was aged in her fifties, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident which happened at Mountplummer just outside the village of Broadford on the road to Ashford.

It is understood the local woman died after she was hit by a 4x4 vehicle - being driven by a young man - at around 8pm last night.

A garda spokesman said the road was closed for several hours last night as technical examinations were conducted.
