AS the Giant Granny was enjoying her three-day visit to Limerick at the weekend, a county Limerick man discovered mushrooms in his garden that were so big he could have fed them to her.

David Hurley, 28 (not this reporter) was cutting the grass at his home in Donoughmore where he discovered the two mushrooms, which were bigger than footballs.

“We have a half-acre and I was out cutting the grass and I just thought they were two soccer balls and I just drove past them on the ride-on mower a few times but when I got closer I realised they were two mushrooms. I stopped the lawn-mower and got off and I couldn’t believe the size of them,” he said, adding that they were as big as basketballs.

David, who works as a security guard at Dunnes Stores, Harvey’s Quay, said there was huge interest locally when word spread of the bizarre discovery as nobody can remember anything like it being discovered before.

“I told my mother and she ran down and she couldn’t believe it and my uncle, who’s about 70, came down and he said he had never seen anything like it and he has been living here all his life,” said David.

After taking photographs of the mushrooms and showing them to his friends and colleagues, David said he then disposed of them as they were being picked at by birds.
