GARDAI are investigating allegations that a gun was discharged at a housing estate on the southside of the city,

According to residents of John Carew Park, the incident happened at a green area at Maigue Way last Thursday evening.

One resident told the Limerick Chronicle the weapon jammed as the culprit attempted to discharge it in the direction of a group of people, who had gathered in the area.

The man, who has asked not to be named, also claimed that a petrol bomb was thrown into a nearby house a short time later as retaliation.

A garda spokesperson confirmed they are aware of the two incidents which happened at around 8.30pm.

House to house inquiries have been conducted in the area and CCTV is also being viewed as part of the investigation.

Forensic examinations have been conducted and it is understood arrests are likely to be made in the near future.

Nobody was injured during either incident and gardai have not recovered a firearm to date.

“We are aware of the allegations and we are looking into them,” said a spokesperson for Roxboro Road garda.

While, the allegations are being treated seriously, at this stage gardai do not believe that either incident is linked to
serious criminality or criminal gangs in the area.
