A post-mortem will be carried out today on the body of a man who died while swimming in Kilkee yesterday evening.

The alarm was raised shortly before 5pm when the man collapsed on the edge of the water at the West Clare coastal resort.

Lifeguards attempted to resuscitate him before he was air-lifted by the Shannon-based coastguard helicopter to University Hospital, Limerick, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

It is understood the man, who was aged in his early 60’s, was from the Shannon area.

It was the second tragedy in Kilkee in the past 8 days.

On July 7, John Looby from Caherdavin suffered a suspected heart attack in the water and was pronounced dead a short time later.
