TWO men from Newcastle West are to face trial at Limerick Circuit Court in connection with a serious assault in the town in 2012.

TWO men from Newcastle West are to face trial at Limerick Circuit Court in connection with a serious assault in the town in 2012.

Alan O’Sullivan, aged 20, of Ballyine, Old Mill, Newcastle West and Eddie Shine, aged 21, of Old Mill, Newcastle West have both been charged with assault causing serious harm following an incident in The Square, Newcastle West on March 11, 2012.

The pair are alleged to have assaulted a 25-year-old man at 3am on a Sunday morning outside a local fast food restaurant. During the altercation, the victim fell to the ground a sustained a serious head injury, for which he later required treatment at Cork University Hospital. Assault causing serious harm carries a maximum penalty of life in prison following conviction at trial.

At Newcastle West District Court last Friday State solicitor Aidan Judge said that books of evidence are still being compiled.

Judge Mary Larkin adjourned the cases until October 11.
