SPEEDING fines and penalty points could become a thing of the past for Limerick drivers, who are being offered a free speed camera warning system in advance of its nationwide launch.

Local company, U-TAG, wants to give 1,000 drivers the system for free, which could help them eradicate fines and penalty points with this new technology.

U-TAG comprises of a smart phone App and an in-car device, not dissimilar to a hands free kit. It uses 3G and GPS technologies to alert drivers to speed traps on the road ahead in real time.

Developed by local businessman, Gerard King and his software development team, U-TAG is essentially a Smart phone Social Network that allows motorists connect with each other for the purpose of issuing real time speed trap alerts.

Drivers passing a ‘tagged’ area will receive a voice notification through their Smart phone alerting them to a what’s ahead, giving enough time to check their speed and take corrective action if necessary.

To ‘tag’ an area and notify other drivers of a speed trap you simply press the in-car device button on your dashboard.

“U-TAG is a community initiative and relies on drivers ‘tagging’ or pressing the U-TAG in-car device button when they see a speed trap. Once the trap is ‘tagged’ all other drivers on that route get a warning to check their speed,” he explained.

U-TAG is looking for 1000 drivers in Limerick, Clare and Kerry to test the product for an eight week period before it goes to nationwide launch.
