MAYOR of Limerick, Cllr Jim Long has paid tribute to Bobby Byrne who passed away aged 75 this morning.

MAYOR of Limerick, Cllr Jim Long has paid tribute to Bobby Byrne who passed away aged 75 this morning.

Bobby - the last man to be mayor for two consecutive terms between 1978 and 1980 - died with his family at his side in Milford Hospice this morning. He was first citizen during Pope John Paul II’s historic visit to Limerick in 1979.

He was a well known publican, running the popular Bobby Byrne’s pub in O’Connell Avenue.

His daughter, Cllr Maria Byrne is a serving councillor, and was Mayor of Limerick in 2010/11.

Mayor Long said: “He was the fairest politician I have ever worked under. I am deeply saddened for his wife Helen, his two sons Stephen and Robert, and my own colleague Maria. I have no words at the moment, it is just extremely extremely sad. This is a huge loss.”
