The incident happened in the Rosbrien area on Sunday evening as the elderly woman was returning from bingo.

Investigating gardai believe the culprit was waiting for the pensioner, and attacking her as she entered her house having got out of a taxi.

The woman, who is aged in her 80s, was knocked to the ground and her handbag stolen.

The victim remains at University Hospital Limerick where her condition is understood to be serious.
