A DATE has been set for the trial of a man accused of murdering two women and two children in Newcastle West in 2010.

John Geary, 33, of Meadow Court, Newcastle West is accused of the murder of his ex-partner Sarah Hines, 25, their five-month-old baby daughter Amy, her three-year-old brother Reece and 20-year-old Alicia Brough at a house in Hazelgrove, Newcastle West on November 15, 2010.

All four were found stabbed to death in the home, and Geary was arrested and charged with their murders the following day.

Geary’s trial, which is expected to last at least two weeks, had been scheduled to begin in Ennis in November, but was adjourned following an application by his defence team.

The case was brought before Mr Justice Paul Carney at the Central Criminal Court in Dublin this Monday, when a new trial date was set for June 17, 2013. Geary’s case has appeared before Newcastle West Court on a number of occasions since he was first charged in November 2010.

He was held in custody for a time at the Central Mental Hospital in Dundrum following his arrest. In January 2011, members of Sarah Hines’ family confronted Geary during a court sitting in Newcastle West, where he was remanded.

This Monday, Geary was further remanded in custody until his trial date next year.
