INVESTIGATIONS are underway after a fireman sustained serious facial injuries when he was attacked while attending the scene of a bonfire in Garryowen last night.

The incident happened shortly after 9pm as firefighters were tackling the fire near Geraldines AFC. It is understood the fireman was injured when a glass bottle was thrown at him by a number of youths who were in the area at the time.

The fireman was hospitalised following the incident but his injuries are not life threatening.

Members of the Limerick city fire service attended a total of 19 incidents across the city last night.

In addition to bonfires, they also attended a house fire in Janesboro and a fire at the former Cathedral Carpets premises on Mungret Street.

Fire units from Cappamore, Kilmallock, Newport and Shannon provided support on what was the busiest night of the year for the fire services in Limerick.
