AN appeal will be heard next month against the decision to destroy two dogs which gardai succesfully applied to have put down claiming they are a danger to the public.

One of the dogs - an Alsatian - bit a garda twice in the leg as he was on patrol in the Ballinacurra Weston area of the city on September 22, last.

The Alsatian, which belongs to a nine-year-old boy, was seized by gardai in October after numerous complaints were made to Limerick City Council about the dog.

A Rottweiler was seized in the Southill area around the same time and last month Judge Eamon O’Brien ordered that both dogs should be destroyed after he granted an application made under the Control of Dogs Act.

The appeal will be heard at Limerick Circuit Court on January 25, 2012.
