AN elderly man has died following a house fire in the St Mary’s Park area of Limerick city.
Three units of the Limerick city fire service attended the blaze which broke out at St Munchin’s Street, shortly before midnight.
A number of neighbours tried to rescue the elderly man who lived alone at the mid-terraced house but they were unable to gain entry because of the flames.
The man, who was aged in his early 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene and a post-mortem examination will be conducted on his body later today. Nobody else was in the house at the time.
The scene was sealed off overnight and forensic experts have conducted examinations at the house.
Gardai at Henry Street are investigating the cause of the fire. However it is not believed to be suspicious.
