DETERMINATION and persistence have paid off dramatically for Newcastle West woman Rosaleen Sexton. At the beginning of last year, Rosaleen weighed in at her first Unislim session at 15 stone but by year’s end, she had lost over five stone and reached her target weight.

And next week, she will show off her newly-svelte figure to the nation and hopes to take the title Unislimmer of the Year at the Unislim Health and Wellness Show in Croke Park.

Nine other slimmers, among them John Kelly from Shannon, will also be vying for the ultimate title.

Rosaleen, however, already feels she is a winner. And her achievement, she says, has transformed her life.

“The moment I realised I had to take action about my weight was in December 2013 when I was out shopping for a dress for a wedding. I found that nothing fitted me and I had to go to the plus size section and buy a size 20 dress,” she reveals. In addition, Rosaleen was being prescribed pain medication for illnesses that were exacerbated by her weight. It was, she says, definitely time to make a change.

Her initial weigh-in with Unislim leader Anne Hynes came as a bit of a surprise. But she was determined that she would never see that number on the weighing scales again and persisted in that determination until she reached her target weight, just twelve months later.

“Walking into Unislim class and meeting my leader Ann Hynes was the best decision I ever made,” says Rosaleen. “You never feel alone with Unislim, the classes and the online support with their Facebook Unislim Chatroom has helped me achieve my dreams.”

Her life, she says, has been changed for the better. “I’m so much happier, I sleep better and I have more energy,” she says, emphasising the health benefits. But she adds: “ I also love going shopping for clothes now that I have a new-found confidence.”

Now, shopping is a breeze and Rosaleen says she is just loving trying new styles that she never thought she would be able to wear. Her family has also benefitted from the switch to healthy meals.

And her advice to anyone who feels that they need to make a change? “I never imagined myself getting to where I am today. It feels surreal, but if I can do it, you can too. Just join your local Unislim class and even if the going gets tough, just keep going.”

The Unislimmer of the Year award will be presented on Saturday, April 18 at a show hosted by Today FM’s Mairead Farrell,
