FINE Gael’s southside councillor Ger Fahy has welcomed the upgrade works which are set to take place at Rathbane Golf Club.

FINE Gael’s southside councillor Ger Fahy has welcomed the upgrade works which are set to take place at Rathbane Golf Club.

Limerick City Council is looking to build a major extension to the facility but because part of the municipal course is in the adminstrative area of Limerick County Council, it has to apply for permission to carry out the works.

Reflecting on the success of the scheme, Cllr Fahy said: “At the time we built this in 1998, there was opposition, because there were very few local authorities with golf courses in the country. There was a feeling that City Council was making a ridiculous decision to develop a course. But after 14 years, everyone admits it is a successful decision”.

Cllr Joe Leddin added: “Rathbane is a magnificent facility - it has had its problems in recent years, but has turned the corner.”
