A NEW link has been added to the mayoral chain in honour of Michael Joyce, who served as Mayor of Limerick between 1905 and 1907.

A NEW link has been added to the mayoral chain in honour of Michael Joyce, who served as Mayor of Limerick between 1905 and 1907.

Mr Boyce, who was a member of the British Parliament when he served as Mayor, was also one of the founding members of Garryowen FC.

A number of his great-grandchilden, who still live in Limerick, attended the official unveiling of the new link by the current Mayor of Limerick, Cllr Jim Long.

“It’s the people’s chain and when it is worn in ceremonial and civic duties, it represents everything that this city stands for and it is wonderful to see a former mayor being honoured with his own link on the chain,” said Mayor Long.

Tom O’Brien, one of Michael Joyce’s great-grandsons, said the addition of the link is a proud moment for his family.

“He is somebody that we, in the family, have great pride in and we are thrilled that he will now be remembered in this way,” said Tom O’Brien, one of Michael Joyce’s great-grandsons.

The link, which is made of solid gold, is the first to be added to the ceremonial chain since a link was added last August to honour JP McManus and it is only the third link to be added since the turn of the millennium.

The latest link, which is the 78th to be added to the 200-year-old chain, was paid for through a private donation.

It was forged by JJ Kenneally jewellers.
