MET Eireann has issued a weather warning for Limerick as up to 45mm of rain is expected to fall throughout today.

Most areas of Munster are expected to badly hit by the heavy rainfall and there is a risk of flooding across Limerick.

According to forecasters, the rainfall will continue to be persistant into tonight and this evening and there is a risk of that up to 90mm of rain will fall in higher areas.

Met Eireann says strong winds will also be a feature of today’s weather with a risk of gusts as high as 110km per hour in some areas.

Gardai and the Road Safety Authority are appealing to motorists to be careful because of the dangerous driving conditions. “Our advice is to slow down and increase your braking distance to 4 seconds to allow for poor surface conditions,” said Noel Brett, chief executive of the Road Safety Authority.

There have been no reports of any serious incidents in Limerick so far.
