GARDAI are questioning a man in his thirties following the discovery of two firearms and a quantity of drugs in Limerick City.

The man was arrested on the south side of the city on Wednesday evening after cannabis - worth around €2,500 - was seized.

During a follow up search at a house in the Janesboro area, gardai recovered two handguns and €1,000 in cash.

Inquiries are ongoing and gardai are continuing to detain the man at Roxboro Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The seizure is being described as a significant result in the ongoing fight against the distribution of drugs in Limerick.

It follows the seizure of a €250,000 in cash on the outskirts of Limerick on Monday.

That money was seized when members of the divisional drugs unit stopped and searched a car in the Ballysimon area.
