CLLR Jim Long looks certain to be elected as the 815th Mayor of Limerick after Cllr Kevin Kiely confirmed he will be supporting his former party colleague.

Cllr Kiely, who earlier this week said he could not guarantee his support for Cllr Long, has now confirmed he will be voting for him at Monday’s AGM of Limerick City Council.

The Fine Gael party, which has seven members on Limerick City Council, had previously announced it would be nominating Cllr Long for the position. and that it hoped Cllr Kiely would support his nomination.

However, on Monday Cllr Kiely said there was “nothing in the bag” and he insisted his decision would be a “political one” and would not be based on his long-standing friendship with the southside councillor.

It is understood the former mayor, who quit Fine Gael last year, held discussions with other parties before announcing his intention to support Cllr Long. “I want to confirm that I will be supporting Jim Long for the position next Monday night and I want to remove any question mark over it,” he told the Limerick Leader.

Cllr Kiely said he had taken some time to reflect on the matter this week and he noted that Cllr Long had supported him when he was elected as Mayor two years ago.

“It’s a very tense time and I’ve been down the road on three occasion and I know it takes its toll on you and it is for that reason that I am announcing my decision that I will be supporting Jim Long for the Mayoralty on Monday night,” he said.

If, as expected, Cllr Long is elected as Mayor Maria Byrne’s successor on Monday he will be the third consecutive Fine Gael councillor to serve as the city’s first citizen.
