MAJOR traffic diversions remain in place in the vicinity of Adare village following a significant fire earlier this afternoon.

The fire began shortly after 2pm at a thatched cottage on Main Street - almost directly across from the local church.

At its peak, seven units of the Limerick City and County fire service, including a water-tanker were deployed and fire service personnel used a skylift as they extinguished the fire.

The cause of the fire, which engulfed a number of buildings, is being investigated but, at this stage, foul play is not suspected.

Traffic diversions remain in place with AA Roadwatch advising motorists to avoid the area, if possible.
