Limerick County Council received more than 1,200 litter complaints last year

limerick County Council have described as “unbelievable” the response from the public in their efforts to curb ongoing problems with litter louts.

The local authority received 1,200 phone calls from the public last year ranging from people complaining that their neighbours have no bin collection, to problems with abandoned cars along to what is turning out to be the very irrating problem of dog fouling on roads and footpaths.

“The response from the public has been unbelievable especially as they now see we are taking action against people who litter,” Mary Killeen Fitzgerald, administrative officer with the Council explained.

An estimated 1,200 phone calls were received on the free litter phone line in 2011 and this year the Council says it is hoping to encourage even greater numbers of people to report incidents of litter in their local community.

She said a break down of the calls showed a lot of variety of complaints.

“Quite a lot of people were concerned about their neighbours having no refuse service. Under new bylaws every household is obliged to have a refuse service and if they don’t they can be prosecuted by us,” she explained.

She said they were “flabbergasted” by the amount of complaints about dog litter. which was now a big health and safety issue. They were now also trying to help dog owners by putting more dog poop bins in the bigger housing estates across Limerick.

Jan O'Sullivan's bonus has nothing to do with this story so nobody is going to pick up on it here. This is about litter.

@Treaty You will not see the Leader highlighting that story about Jan O'Sullivan any time soon.

How come the Leader has failed to cover the story that has hit all the national papers this week and was cover on Vincent Browne last night that our own Jan O Sullivan is to receive a bonus payment of €17,205 tax free whilst she stands over property tax, increase in third level fees, septic tank charges and a whole other range of austerity attacks on the people of Ireland. Is it a happy coincidence that she pays the Leader a weekly advertising fee? http:www.youtube.comwatch?v=G5GtdGBEknY

There is no point in placing dog poop bins around, the majority of dog owners are too ignorant to use them. Irish people only understand 'the stick'. Until drink driving laws were enforced, many Irish drivers drove after a few drinks with impunity. Tax evasion was a national pastime here until financial penalties were imposed. Until the council starts fining people who leave dog excrement all over the place, nothing will change.
