Limerick firm receives multi million euro boost

A LIMERICK research centre has received a major boost after the government agreed to invest almost €23m in it.
Lero, the Irish Software Engineering Centre, which employs 170 researchers and PhD students at UL, has secured the funding under the Science Foundation of Ireland (SFI) Scheme.
And there is more good news for the centre after it emerged it will get a further contribution of €6.4m in second term funding.
Based at the International Science Centre in Plassey, Lero exists to deliver research in software engineering with a special emphasis on evolving critical systems.
It’s number one goal is to establish Ireland as a world-leading location for the development of high-quality software intensive systems of high economic and social value.
Making the announcement at the University of Limerick, Minister for Research and Innovation Sean Sherlock said the money will allow the Lero team to increase collaboration with industry and provide for increased commercialisation opportunities in Ireland.
“This renewal SFI funding to Lero is in recognition of their research excellence and considerable impacts already delivered.”
Lero director Prof Mike Hinchey said the firm is hoping to generate an increase in commercial activity over the next five years.
This, he said, will include intensifying its collaboration with industry. “This investment will serve to strategically support the realisation of those plans,” he said.
