February 16 - Caught on O’Connell Street circa 1943
THIS old photograph of my father Tadgh Smalle may be of interest to Limerick Leader readers. It was taken at lower O’Connell Street around 1943 and it shows the business premises across the street from the old Todds building, which burned down in August 1959.
My father was the truant officer for the old Compulsory School, at the Atheneum building in Upper Cecil Street, located adjacent to the old Royal Cinema. I remember going there after school in 1954 to see The Student Prince. It was one shilling for the stalls at that time and performances were continuous, so one stayed on to see the part missed.
The gentleman talking to my father may be Michael O’Malley, formerly a solicitor at Glentworth Street, or his brother Desmond O’Malley, an uncle of Dessie O’Malley the politician.
