October 26 - lauding our ‘wonderful old photos’

I WISH to congratulate you, Mr Editor, on the huge number of photographs from the past which have been a constant in your paper these past few years. How interesting to read, in your edition of October 12, that local motor dealer Frank Hogan regards these pictures as among the most interesting parts of the Leader.

I would share that sentiment. I hope you don’t mind me observing it seems to me these wonderful old photographs are frequently more interesting than the news of today.

I distinctly recall my very first appearance in your noted pages and if you allow me the space I will provide chapter and verse. The year was 1968 and I was a callow youth not long out of primary school at Sexton Street. I was also a student of speech and drama and in that capacity earned a silver medal in the Feile Luimni of that year.

The chap who took the gold medal, quite rightly, was given front page treatment. For me, there was the consolation prize of a smaller photograph inside the body of the newspaper. Needless to say, several copies of same were procured by my proud mother - one of which was posted to her sister in Canada.

How I would love to see that picture again! I live in hope that it will make an appearance one of these days.
