January 31 - Well done friendly Limerick, you have it made!

Paul O'Connell is a friendly chap to meet about town
Recently my wife won a voucher for a weekend anywhere in Ireland. I was always telling her how nice and friendly the people of Limerick are and how good the shopping can be. So off we went.

Recently my wife won a voucher for a weekend anywhere in Ireland. I was always telling her how nice and friendly the people of Limerick are and how good the shopping can be. So off we went.

While I was waiting to buy a parking ticket in Gleeson’s shop, I noticed this lady, very excited, in front of me. She was hopping up and down quite excitable. I thought maybe Cyril from Come Dine With Me was signing autographs outside or maybe her husband had bought her two tickets to see Garth Brooks. Just then, I looked over my shoulder and – lo and behold – who was standing behind me only the legend Paul O’Connell – all 6ft 10in of him. Well, I didn`t know how to react.

Just then, he shook the woman’s hand and spoke a few words to her. Well, the poor woman nearly fainted. It was magic to witness such a wonderful gesture of kindness. What a gentleman, a smashin’ guy. He shook hands with customers and the proprietor. Then he spoke to me. Well, it was like the almighty had spoken. I was really honoured.

Paul is a credit to Limerick and Munster Rugby. It’s no wonder Limerick is Ireland`s Capital of Culture, with people like Paul O’Connell there. Here in Kilkenny we have another gentleman living among us; the legend Mick Galwey - a true gent.

My wife totally agreed with me – Limerick is a very friendly city, a beautiful city. Take a bow. The sports are terrific. The good citizens of Limerick should be proud.

They said Kilkenny is fifth in line of friendly cities. Well, to be quite honest, Limerick is not far behind and I must sincerely thank the magnificent staff of the Absolute Hotel. They should get a Golden Globe or an Oscar for their kindness.

Well done, Limerick. Congratulations, you have it made
