Youth arrested over Limerick rape is released

The Crescent Shopping Centre

A TEENAGER who was being questioned by gardai about the alleged rape of a 14-year-old girl last week has been released without charge.

The 17-year-old, who was arrested in the Newcastle West area yesterday, was questioned at Roxboro garda station about the incident which happened in the car park of the Crescent Shopping centre on November 25, last.

Specially trained officers have interviewed the alleged victim about her ordeal and a number of other teenagers have also given statements to investigating gardai.

Detectives attached to Roxboro Road garda station have viewed CCTV footage from the shopping centre and they have made enquiries as to who owned the van, in which the incident happened.

It is understood they are satisfied there was some contact between the victim and her alleged attacker prior to the incident - possibly through a social media website - but there is no suggestion that she was forced into the van.

A file on the incident will be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions in the coming weeks.

A garda spokesperson confirmed that even if the girl had consensual sex a criminal offence may still have been committed because of her age.
