FAREWELL TONY: Tony Quinn, a native of Carrigkerry now resident in Balliniska, Feohanagh, served as postman in Tournafulla ( and took in part of Strand and Ashford) for 33 years, from 1979 to 2012. On Friday night last the people he served so well paid him a fitting tribute in Halla Tadhg Gaelach. Our parish priest, Fr. O’Gorman, who has known Tony for 40 years, spoke very highly of a most efficient and discreet gentleman. He spoke of the role of the postman as a social worker. Tony had a word for everyone and did more than deliver mail to people. As was proved by the turnout on Friday night he was loved and trusted by the people. Anne Curtin and Mary O’Mahoney presented Tony with an engraved glass bowl, while Timmy Horgan presented him with a gift bag. Afterwards we had music, song and dance from our wonderful entertainers. Tony then cut the cake which was made and beautifully decorated by Kay McNaught. The ladies committee made sure there was plenty to eat and drink for all present. We say farewell to a great public servant. Tony, we wish you health and happiness in your retirement. A special word of thanks to the organising committee of Anne Curtin, Mary O’Mahoney, Timmy Horgan, Thomas Long, James Wright, Kay McNaught and Seamus O’Sullivan and to Megan and Gerry Guiney for providing the PA.

POSTMAN TONY: On Friday, April 19, at 9 p.m. un Halla Tadhg Gaelach, we will hold a party for our former postman of 33 years, Tony Quinn. Tony gave tremendous service and this is an opportunit for people to say thanks and show their appreciation. All the people of the parish and of Tony’s postal area are invited to attend.

LATE MARY MURPHY: The death occurred during the weekend of Mary Murphy (nee Fealey) of Dalton’s Terrace, Athea. Deceased, who was in her ‘80’s, was still in fairly good health up to a short time ago and used attend Mass at the local Church accompanied by one of her daughters. Mary was originally from Abbeyfeale but had lived for most of her life in Athea where she and her late husband David (Sonny) Murphy raised a big family. The Murphy family and extended family are well-known and highly regarded and it must be one of the most plentiful names in Athea. In recent years there have been a lot of sad bereavements in the Murphy families. Mary’s own daughter Marie died a few days after she was married in a ceremony in the Regional Hospital, Limerick some years ago in a wedding that touched the hearts and evoked the sympathy and admiration of thousands of people throughout Limerick and beyond for Marie and her young husband. Mary’s husband Sonny, her brother in-laws Tom and John all died within recent years and it is only some weeks ago when Mary’s brother in-law Liamie and his wife Hannah both died within a fortnight of each other . And now Mary’s unexpected death coming on top of all this makes it particularly sad for all the local Murphy families. There was a big attendance of people from far and near at Kelly’s Funeral Home on Monday evening who came to offer sympathy to Mary Murphy’s family and relatives before the removal to St Bartholomew’s Church, Athea. The Requiem Mass on Tuesday and the funeral in the afternoon to Holy Cross cemetery were also well attended. Sympathy is extended to her sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters, nieces, nephews, sisters, her in-laws and other relatives. ‘May her soul rest in peace’.

LATE MICHAEL O’CONNOR: The death occurred during the past week of Michael O’Connor of Charleville Co. Cork. Deceased, who was a native of Upper Athea, had lived in the North Cork area for many years where he was a well liked member of the local community. He had been in failing health for some time prior to his passing and his death is regretted by his family members, relatives, friends and neighbours in Charleville and Athea. The Requiem Mass was celebrated in Charleville and the funeral took place on Saturday afternoon at Holy Cross Cemetery, Athea. Sympathy is extended to his family in Charleville, his brother Seanie and other relatives in Athea. ‘May his soul rest in peace’.

MISSING PERSONS: Irelands missing persons will be remembered on Sunday May 12 at 2pm at Knockfierna near Adare, Co. Limerick. The day’s events are hosted by Knockfierna Heritage Society and guest speakers will include Mary Phelan, Co. Killkenny the sister of 21 year old JoJo Dollard missing since November 9, 1995 and Bob Shanahan, Limerick City whose son Gus is missing since February 11, 2000 also guest speaker on the day is Mark Patrick Hedderman, Abbot of Glenstal Abbey, Co. Limerick. The names of other missing people will be recalled. A large attendance is expected on the day and all are welcome. CELEBRATION: The fiftieth Anniversary of Tarbert Primary School is being celebrated next Saturday from 4 to 7pm. The following is brief outline of the programme of events. BAKE SALE: Monagea National School is holding a bake sale on this Friday May 10th from 2 to 4pm. This is in memory of two past pupils, Niamh Herlihy and Darra O’Donovan, who died from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome in 2011. All the proceeds will go to the CRY organisation which is associated with Sudden Adult Death Syndrome. Please bring cakes/buns/tarts (bought or baked) to the school on Friday morning. Everyone from the school community, the parish and the wider area are invited to support this worthy cause.

WALK/RUN/CYCLE: After all the preparations the day finally arrives on this Saturday 4th May. The cycle starts at 11am and the walk/run starts at 12 noon. There is a 40km and an 80km cycle. Both sets of cyclists travel via Rathcahill, Strand, Glenquin, Ashford, Broadford and Dromcollogher. The 40km group turn left in The Square Dromcollogher to Feohanagh, Newcastle West (via Rathina) and back to Monagea. The 80km group continue to Milford, Newtownshandrum and into Charleville. In Charleville they turn left along the Cork-Limerick Road to Rourkes Cross. They go left at Rourkes Cross and back to Newcastle West via Rathina to Monagea. The walk/run travels via Gardenfield, Killeline, Newcastle West, and back to Monagea via Ballyshane. The organisers would like everyone who has not registered to come early on the day so that everything can get going as planned. A bank account has been open in AIB Rathkeale to accept donations. The account number is 04555099 and the sort code is 935263. Money can be lodged to that account from any bank. The event is being organised by the families of the late Niamh Herlihy and Darra O’Donovan. All the funds raised will go to the CRY organisation which might help early detection of heart problems and may save young lives. All we can hope for now is that the weather will be kind and everyone can have an enjoyable day.

Knocknagoshel Notes

AGM: The Annual General Meeting of Fealebridge and Headley Bridge CO-OP Creamery Shareholders took place in the Community Centre, Knocknagoshel on Wednesday night last. The attendance which was down from m previous years was addressed by Auditor Ken Jonson of Pricewaterhouse Coopers. Ken gave a detailed account of the working of the CO-OP in a very difficult year for farmers. He was reappointed as was all outgoing committee members. The CO-OP founded in 1912 is one of a few small individual CO-OPS in the whole country.

Nightowels: A record crowd attended the Launch on Sunday evening last in Nightowels, Castleisland, of Cait Curtin’s book of poems “Stories in Rhyme”. The Launch was performed by Tommy Frank O’Connor, who was loud in his praise of all the wonderful poems in the book and thanked all for attending before Cait sat down to a busy time signing copies. Catherine Brosnan and Marie O’Callaghan were most efficient at the sales desk. While some browsed through the book others renewed friendships from yesteryear before all dispersed in all directions and a great evening was had by all. The proceeds are being donated to Aware.

Jimmy McCathy: Another link with the outstanding achievements of Knocknagoshel sportsmen in that golden era of the 1940s was severed with the death last week in Dublin of Jimmy Mc Carty. Jimmy son of the late schoolteacher Pat was a Kerry minor footballer in the early 1940s and was also an athlete of note not least at the highly rated Pattern Sports in Knocknagoshel and elsewhere in that era. Sincere sympathy is extended to all his relatives and friends.

Con Houlihan Seminar and Folk School: Minister Jimmy Deenihan will officially open the first Con Houlihan Seminar and Folk School on Saturday May 4th from 9am to 2pm at the Castleisland Carnival Festival Dome at the Castleisland Rugby Grounds, Crageens. Castle island. Special guest will be Mayor of Kerry Cllr Terry O’Brien. The Sec-Facilitator is Cllr Bobby O’Connell and the chairman is Knocknagoshel Village native Donal P Murphy. The speakers Aidan Murphy, Dublin and Tralee, Billy Keane Listowel, Michael O’Regan, Dublin and Tralee. Also in attendance will be Frank Greally , Dublin and Mayo and a personel friend of Con Houlihan for many years. Local Government Delegates many from Monaghan, Louth and Donegal have registered for the Seminar. An invitation goes out to local Castle island , Knocknagoshel and Sliabh Luachra people and the chairman Donal P Murphy has reserved seats for the ordinary citizen as it was these people who gave Con inspiration and he never turned his back on his friends and neighbours. Con befriended the common man during his lifetime.

Birthday: This week we extend birthday greetings to Shelia Carmody of Ballyduff, Knocknagoshel. God willing Shelia wife of the late Bob Carmody, will celebrate her 99th birthday on the 24th of this month. Shelia nee Brosnan was born in Dromada where one of her neighbours was the late renowned matchmaker Dan Paddy Andy O’Sullivan. All her life Shelia has enjoyed the best of health which she attributes to hard work. Prior to working on the farm with her husband Bob , she worked as a dressmaker and never knew the meaning of boredom. Longlivity comes in her family. Her mother lived to be 99 years old, and her grandmother lived to be 104 years. Shelia is devoted to her five children, and ten grandchildren . Shelia is very proud of the fact she is a first cousin of wellknown poet and Journalist Pat Brosnan of Athea and formerly of Dromada. For the past two years Shelia has resided at St Joseph’s Nursing Home, Killorglin where she has as regular visitors her former neighbours Mary and Donie Reidy and Christina and Joe Walsh . We wish Shelia all the best in the future.
