Two men to be charged over Limerick murder
Two men are due before the Special Criminal Court this morning charged in connection with the murder of Roy Collins
GARDAI are expected to charge two Limerick men with the murder of Roy Collins at the Special Criminal Court tomorrow.
Mr Collins, aged 34, was shot dead in April 2009 outside his family’s Arcade business at the Roxboro Shopping Centre.
At the time, his murder was described by government ministers as a “direct attack” on the criminal justice system, as Mr Collins was targeted because a member of his family had testified in court against a senior figure of a Limerick-based criminal gang.
Thousands of people marched through Limerick city centre following the killing to show solidarity with his family, who have since moved abroad after entering a witness protection programme.
In May 2010, James Dillon, 26, was jailed for life after he admitted shooting Mr Collins.
Yesterday, gardai investigating the murder made an application at the Special Criminal Court to have two other men produced before the court non-jury court tomorrow.
One of the men, aged in his 30s, is suspected of ordering Mr Collins’ murder while the second man, who is in his 20s, is believed to have travelled in the car with the gunman James Dillon.
