TWO men have appeared before a special sitting of Limerick District Court charged in connection with a significant drugs seizure on the outskirts of the city on Friday evening,

Kieran Nevin, 35, of Oliver Plunkett Street, St Mary’s Park and Shane Ferguson, 44, of Meadowbrook, Mill Road, Corbally are each accused of posession of Cannabis herb for the purpose of sale ofr supply. The is alleged the drugs have a street value in excess of €1.5 million.

Almost 80 kilogrammes of the drugs were seized when gardai searched a cottage on the outskirts of the city at around 8.30pm on Friday.

At today’s special court sitting, Insp Paul Reidy opposed bail applications which were made on behalf of the men by solicitor John Herbert. Judge Aeneas McCarthy refused to grant Nevin Bail but he granted Ferguson conditional bail.

The judge said he was reserving his position in relation to free legal aid pending the completion of a statement of means by each of the defendants.

Both men are due to appear before the court again next Thursday.
