Traffic chaos after oil spill on route to Shannon
Firefighters laid down chemical dispersants on a stretch of the Limerick to Shannon Road where the spill took place
THERE was traffic chaos on the Limerick-Shannon road over the weekend, following an oil spill.
Some 30 passengers travelling to Shannon Airport missed flights after a 20km outbound stretch of road was closed.
The road - between Shannon, and Portdrine, near Cratloe - was closed off for more than ten hours following the spill on Friday.
Fire crews and council workers were deployed to clean-up after the spill, while a number of motorists became involved in collisions as a result.
Traffic was very slow, because of this, and drivers were asked to reduce their speed.
The road eventually reopened on Saturday morning, after clean-up crews worked through Friday night.
Two flights out of Shannon were affected by the spill, which happened at teatime on Friday.
These were the Aer Lingus departure to Manchester at 7.15pm, and the Ryanair flight to London Stansted at 9.55pm.
A spokesperson for the airport confirmed 30 passengers missed their flight, “but they were re-accommodated on flights the following day”.
The spokesperson could not give specifics as to passengers on which flights were re-accommodated.
But a spokesperson for Ryanair said they had no information on this, and the airline does not take responsibility for factors outside of its control.
