Appeal: Henry Street gardai are seeking information

A 48-YEAR-OLD who threatened to shoot gardai who tried to remove him from a city medical centre last month is to be assessed for probation after Limerick District Court heard the threat was not taken seriously.

Gerard Freyne, who resides at the Brother Russell Home on Mulgrave Street, had fallen asleep on a couch at the Healthwise Clinic at Johnsgate.

He pleaded guilty to public order offences arising from the incident which occurred on December 8 last. Judge Eugene O’Kelly was told that Mr Freyne, who had no business at the clinic, had been causing a nuisance to patients who were waiting.

He was highly intoxicated and fell asleep and when gardai were called to remove him, he had threatened to shoot them.

It was accepted by Inspector Luke Conlon that the threat was not taken seriously.

Solicitor Tom Kiely said Mr Freyne was so drunk he didn’t know what he was doing and was very apologetic.

Judge O’Kelly warned Mr Freyne he could not just go into buildings and fall asleep on couches - but agreed to adjourn the matter for review to May 8 and ordered a probation report.
