Son of murdered Limerick crime boss convicted for handling stolen property
Solicitor John Herbert said Keane was not aware the property had been "stolen quite so recently"
A SON of murdered Limerick gang figure Kieran Keane has been fined in court after admitting a charge of handling stolen property.
“If people don’t pay for these goods, then there’s no market for them...it creates a market for others to steal,” Judge Eugene O’Kelly said in respect of 22-year-old Kieran Keane Jr, of Claughaun Avenue in Garryowen.
Keane pleaded guilty at Limerick District Court to handling stolen property – namely a Mio satellite navigation system worth €120 – at his home on March 31 last.
The court heard that Keane doesn’t have a driver’s licence and doesn’t drive.
The sat nav had been stolen from a car in Annacotty eight days before Keane’s home in Garryowen was searched by gardai and the stolen property found. He had initially claimed the property was his.
It was subsequently identified by the injured party, Inspector Seamus Nolan, Henry Street Garda Station, told the court.
Keane’s solicitor John Herbert said that while he did initially try to deny the offence to gardai, Keane now wished to offer his apologies.
“He was not aware that it had been stolen quite so recently. He did hand over money for it,” Mr Herbert said.
Asked by Judge O’Kelly whether his client was “covering for somebody”, Mr Herbert said he was not prepared to disclose from whom he bought the property.
The court heard that Keane, a father-of-one, has no previous convictions of this nature.
He was fined €250 for handling stolen property with 12 weeks to pay and two days in prison in default.
