Shop owner captures local councillor
A PROMINENT Fianna Fail councillor has been caught red handed on CCTV taking a newspaper cutting from the front door of a local shop, without permission from the owner.
A page of a local newspaper containing an article about a proposed sub-garda station in the Westbury estate was removed from the front door of Westbury Stores on Sunday evening by Cllr Cathal Crowe, who was seemingly unaware that his actions were caught on CCTV.
Proprietor, Tony Hayes identified Clare Councillor Cathal Crowe as the culprit when he viewed CCTV footage of his shop on Sunday night.
The article outlined proposals by Mr Hayes that offices adjacent to his shop would be suitable for a garda base in the estate. Cllr Crowe's opposition to the proposal was highlighted in green marker and Mr Hayes believes this is the reason why the councillor wanted the paper removed from public view.
The matter has been brought to the attention of Ardnacrusha gardai who have already viewed the digital recording.
The footage, seen by the Limerick Leader, clearly shows Cllr Crowe cycling to the shop with a female friend. He is seen reading the article and then peeping in the door. The cameras capture the councillor remove the page from the front door of the family-run business before cycling away.
Cllr Crowe did not comment on the incident when contacted by the Limerick Leader, but did say that he could not have run away due to a knee injury.
In a statement issued to this newspaper, Cllr Crowe said he had no problem with Mr Hayes "or any other landlord in the area wishing to lease their premises to the Office of Public Works or the Department of Justice" as a sub-garda station.
"I am supportive of a garda base that would co-exist with Ardnacrusha. I am also looking at tangible short term solutions such as assigning more garda to Ardnacrusha and increasing patrols of the area."
