Sadness for JP McManus despite Cheltenham victory

RACING tycoon JP McManus has said his thoughts are with Limerick jockey JT McNamara after he was seriously injured in a fall at Cheltenham yesterday.

The 37-year-old, who is from Croom, underwent surgery at Bristol’s Frenchay Hospital this morning after he fractured two vertebrae while riding Galaxy Rock in the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup.

Speaking this afternoon after his horse, At Fishers Cross, won the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle, JP McManus said his thoughts were with JT McNamara and his family.

“It’s always nice to have a winner in Cheltenham, it’s nice to have runners here, it’s nice to be here. The day is marred with sadness for JT and what he going through and what his family are going through and we are here today but we feel guilty here, we feel we should be doing something for him, I just wish we could,” he told Clare Balding on Channel 4.

JP McManus enjoyed further success when his horse, Alderwood, won the final race of this year’s Cheltenham festival - the Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Chase.

Meanwhile, Dr Adrian McGoldrick, the Irish Turf Club’s chief medical officer, said this afternoon that JT McNamara remains in a serious but stable condition after undergoing surgery this morning.

The married father-of-three, who is a first cousin of fellow Croom jockey Andrew McNamara, is one of Ireland’s leading amateur jockeys with more than 600 winners to his name.

A further update on his condition is not expected until tomorrow.
