A YOUTH was fined €100 at Limerick Court after he pleaded guilty to begging outside a cafe in the city centre.

Vasile Muntean, aged 18, who has addresses in Clonmel and Athlone pleaded guilty to “harassing, intimidating, and obstructing” members of the public at Little Catherine Street on December 20, last.

Insp Luke Conlon said the defendant was arrested after he was observed begging at around 10.30am.

Solicitor John Devane said his client had been in the area for a few minutes and he told the court he did not have enough money to get the bus home.

Imposing a €100 fine, Judge Eugene O’Kelly noted that Muntean has 12 previous convictions - including several for theft offences elsewhere in the country.

“Limerick is lucky he was only begging, he steals everywhere else he goes,” he commented.
