Republicans issue threat to British Army ‘targets’

THE Continuity IRA (CIRA) has delivered a chilling message to Limerick men who are considering joining the British Army that it considers them a “legitimate target”.
During a Republican Sinn Fein commemoration of Sean South, on Sunday, a message was read on behalf of CIRA prisoners at Portlaoise Prison.
“We have seen in recent years in the city of Limerick that Irish men are considering a career in the British Army - the same British Army that holds six of our counties,” read the statement, which was delivered at the Republican Plot at Mount Saint Lawrence cemetery.
It added: “Whether they are motivated by financial reasons or a sense of adventurism, we take this opportunity to say that the moment you don a British uniform you become a legitimate target for the IRA.”
Between 60 and 70 people - some of whom were dressed in full military fatigues - took part in the commemoration which began at Bedford Row before making its way to the Republican plot at Mount Saint Lawrence cemetery.
There was a strong garda presence throughout yesterday’s commemoration as more than 20 plain clothes officers and Special Branch detectives took photographs and videos of the march.
A number of those who took part in the march were also spoken to and their details noted, but there were no arrests.
Yesterday’s developments come less than a month after it emerged gardai had thwarted a plot to kill a Limerick man who is a member of the British Army.
The man, who is in late 20’s, was due to return home to the city for Christmas but changed his plans when details of the CIRA plot were discovered.
“The Republican men and women who are held in free-state and six-county jails are proof that the war is not over. It will be over when every last British soldier is driven from our shores once and from all,” read the statement from the CIRA prisoners.
Meanwhile, a number of other ceremonies were held yesterday to commemorate the death of Sean South on New Year’s Day in 1957.
More than 80 people took part in a march which was organised by Limerick City Sinn Fein.
In his oration, Dublin city councillor Mícheál Mac Donncha described Finance Minister Michael Noonan as a “modern Trevelyan” for “condemning Irish people to poverty and emigration in pursuit of the failed economic doctrine of austerity”.
