Reported crimes fall across Limerick garda division
THE chairman of the County Limerick Joint Policing Committee (JPC) has welcomed figures which show there was a reduction in most types of crime across Limerick during the third quarter of this year.
The figures, released by Chief Supt David Sheahan, show all categories of reported crime fell during August, September and October when compared to the same period in 2011.
According to the figures, property crime fell by 14%, crimes against the person fell by 8% and drugs and weapons offences fell by 15%.
While most types of reported crime were down year-on-year the number of thefts from shops increased by 8% and the number of bicycles which were reported stolen increased by 9%.
While relatively low, the number of thefts from the person increased by €28% and the number of incidents involving the handling of stolen property also increased.
There were 107 minor assaults during the three-month-period and 27 more serious assaults.
The number of sexual assaults increased by 57% to 22 while the number of reported rapes fell by two thirds to just two.
There were no murders or human trafficking offences in the Limerick garda division during the three months.
The number of drugs offences fell generally but there was a slight increase in the number of incidents of people growing or cultivating cannabis.
“The figures for the last quarter of this year are very positive, burglaries in particular are down significantly and that is attributed to a lot of hard work that has been done by ourselves but people can’t become complacent,” said Chief Supt Sheahan.
Cllr Liam Galvin, chairman of the JPC, said the reported-crime figures make good reading.
“The figures have to be welcomed, it’s great when you see crime on the reduction and I think the guards need to be complemented on that. They are working hard, there is no doubt it,” he said.
Earlier Cllr Galvin labelled as “disgraceful” the small attendance of members at the JPC meeting.
“There were five superintendents and a chief superintendent who attended the meeting for an hour, hour-and-a--half, that’s an awful waste of time and valuable resources I think if they are willing to give the time to attend JPC meetings I think our members should also be willing to their time,” he said,
