Pipe bombs discovered at Limerick city housing estate

GARDAI are investigating the discovery of a number of pipe-bombs at a housing estate in Limerick city.
The alarm was raised at lunchtime today after a bag containing the devices was located during a garda search of a shed in an area of waste ground at Granville Park, Ballysimon.
Following the discovery, seven houses were evacuated and a wide area sealed off pending the arrival of an Army Explosive Ordinance Disposal(EOD) team from Collins Barracks in Cork.
Local residents told the Limerick Leader they were “shocked and horrified” at the discovery in the normally quiet estate and local councillor, Kieran O’Hanlon said it was a “very serious and worrying” development.
Supt Frank O’Brien of Henry Street Garda Station said gardai searched the area this morning after they received confidential information that explosives may have been stored there. “This is a result of ongoing garda intelligence into the whole area of organised crime and subversive activity. On this particular occasion it was as a result of information we received in that context.” he said.
It is understood at least six pipe-bombs were recovered at the shed and all of the devices have now been removed. They will be forensically examined by gardai once they are made safe.
